Family Experience FAQs
What should we wear?
Simple is always a good choice, but don’t be afraid to express yourself. The best policy is to avoid bold patterns or logos that might distract from your face or the feeling of the photo. When it comes to colors, think about the season:
Fall: Warm earth tones, cozy textures, and layered looks always shine.
Spring: Pastels and soft neutrals feel fresh and timeless.
Summer: This is the time for bold colors, sundresses, and lighter fabrics.
Winter: Everything goes! Snow and bare trees make white pop, but deep tones, rich colors, and even brights can all look amazing against the muted backdrop.
When in doubt, white is always a win, it flatters most skin tones, looks clean, and lets you be the star.
If it’s cloudy, should we reschedule?
Nope! Honestly, I pray for clouds. Cloudy skies create the most flattering light, soften skin tones, and reduce harsh shadows. They also add beautiful drama and texture to the sky. Cloudy days are a photographer’s secret weapon.
What if it’s sunny? Should we reschedule then?
Still no! While full sun is more challenging, I always choose locations with options for shade and directional light. We’ll find a spot where the light works for us, not against us. And if we need to balance harsh lighting, I’ve got tools, like supplemental lighting and editing magic, to help even everything out. Between Lightroom's subject masking and AI selection tools, balancing light in post is so much easier now than it used to be.
I have a new blemish, how can I cover it up?
Honestly? Don’t even worry about it. Temporary blemishes are incredibly easy for me to remove during the editing process. Your efforts to cover it up might actually draw more attention to it. Just come as you are, I’ve got you covered.
How much Photoshopping is included in the session price?
A lot more than you might expect! I want your final gallery to feel polished and flattering, so blemishes, logos on clothing (if you'd like them removed), and even lipstick on teeth (it happens… often!) are all included.
That said, I won’t fundamentally change who you are. I won’t erase a baby bump from your wedding day or retouch someone’s age away. I want your images to reflect your real story, beautifully and honestly. I believe photography should celebrate who you are, not create a version of you that feels false or generic.
Why does it take weeks to get my photos?
Great photography takes time. After your session, I work through several creative phases: sorting and selecting the strongest images, making global adjustments, individually editing each photo, doing any necessary Photoshop work, and finally reviewing the gallery to ensure everything feels cohesive. Each phase takes focus, energy, and fresh eyes, and I space them out so the quality never suffers. I don’t power through when I’m tired or distracted; instead, I return to the work over many days so your images get the full care and attention they deserve. And even when I think it’s done, I wait one more day before delivery, so I can view the gallery like you would, with a fresh perspective.
How long is the photo session?
Most sessions last about an hour, give or take, depending on the flow, the light, and the energy. I never rush through moments. If we’re chasing golden hour light or working with small children, I always build in some buffer time so we can relax and enjoy the experience.
What happens if my kid melts down?
Honestly? It’s fine. It happens. I have years of experience working with families, and some of my favorite photos have come from moments in between, when a kiddo’s snuggled in, regrouping, or being their wild, silly self. We’ll take our time, stay flexible, and I’ll capture the beauty in whatever unfolds.
What if someone gets sick or we have to reschedule?
Life happens! If someone is sick or there’s a genuine emergency, I’m always happy to reschedule. I just ask for as much notice as you can give me. I keep a few makeup days open in my calendar to make this process as stress-free as possible.
Can we bring pets?
Yes, please! Pets are family, too. Just let me know ahead of time so I can help pick a location that’s safe and welcoming. Bring treats, a favorite toy, and maybe a buddy to help wrangle them between shots.
