I've Got You Covered!
Getting a headshot taken can feel like a big deal—because it is. This image will represent your professional self to the world, so it’s worth putting a little thought into how you want to show up. Feeling confident and authentic in front of the camera starts with being prepared, and that’s where this guide comes in. I’ll walk you through what to expect and how to get ready so we can create something that looks polished and genuinely reflects who you are.
Here are a few simple steps to help you feel confident, relaxed, and ready for your headshot session.
1. Know Your Vibe
Before your session, take a few minutes to think about how you want to come across in your photos. Do you want your image to feel approachable and friendly, strong and confident, or stylish and creative? Your headshot should reflect your personality and how you want to present yourself in your field. If you have a certain feel or vibe in mind, please share it with me! A quick Pinterest board, a few photo examples, or even a mood word (like “warm,” “bold,” or “refined”) can go a long way in helping me tailor your session to match your vision.
2. What to Wear
Choose clothing that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and pulled together. A few helpful guidelines: Solid colors work best. Avoid busy patterns or logos that distract from your face. Layering can add dimension and style, think blazers, cardigans, or structured tops. Necklines should flatter your face and suit the purpose of your headshot (for example, a high neckline for a corporate look or something more relaxed for a creative field). Bring a couple of options! If you're unsure, I’m happy to help you choose on-site.
3. Hair & Makeup
Light, natural makeup that enhances your features tends to photograph well. If you’re doing your own: Use matte products to minimize shine. Avoid heavy eyeliner or bold lip colors unless that’s part of your personal brand. A little translucent powder can go a long way in keeping things polished. Hair should be styled simply and in a way that feels natural for you. For some clients, hiring a professional hair and makeup artist gives an extra boost of confidence, but it’s totally optional!
4. Hydrate, Sleep, and Prep
Try to get a good night’s sleep the night before and drink plenty of water. It really does show in your skin and eyes. And don’t worry, blemishes, spots on your clothes, or minor distractions can all be touched up in post-processing. If you wear glasses and want some photos with and without them, bring a case to safely tuck them away mid-shoot.
5. Relax, I’ve Got You
It’s normal to feel a little awkward in front of the camera at first. I’ll guide you through poses, help you find your best angles, and keep the vibe fun and relaxed. My goal is always to help you feel seen, confident, and comfortable. You don’t need to have it all figured out ahead of time, just bring yourself, and we’ll create something great together.
