Harpers Ferry is one of the most picturesque places in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, where history, nature, and small-town charm come together in one unforgettable backdrop. With historic architecture, mountain overlooks, and the meeting of two rivers, it’s no wonder Harpers Ferry is such a sought-after location for photos. While there are a few logistics to keep in mind, the beauty of this spot is absolutely worth it.

Parking

For the best experience, I recommend parking at the Visitor’s Center (171 Shoreline Drive, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425) and taking the shuttle bus into Lower Town. Street parking in Lower Town is extremely limited, and the train station lot is reserved for specific uses like commuters, river access, or Appalachian Trail hikers. The park entrance fee covers both parking and the shuttle ride.

One thing to note: for sunset sessions, you might need to make a special plan for parking since, depending on the season, the shuttle will stop running before the golden hour is over. For sunset sessions, we will check the schedule before you park and take the shuttle.

If you’d like to skip the fee, there is limited but free parking in nearby Bolivar along W. Washington Street. From there, it’s a short (though fairly steep) walk down into Lower Town, where most sessions begin.

Fees to Visit the Park

If you park at the Visitor’s Center, the train station, or Virginius Island, there is a $20 per vehicle entrance fee, unless you have a park pass. This fee supports the national park and helps maintain the historic and natural beauty of the area.

Crowds

Harpers Ferry is a popular destination, and for good reason! On weekends, in the evenings, and especially in the fall, it can be quite busy. Some areas may be too crowded to use during your session, but don’t worry, there are plenty of hidden corners and scenic nooks to explore. And with a little Photoshop magic, I can remove extra people in the background, if needed.

If you have mobility concerns or will be bringing a stroller, let me know in advance so I can plan a customized route for us. Even if we don’t make it up to the St. Peter’s Church overlook, there are plenty of equally beautiful spots to capture your story.
